Winter Staples: Taeyeon’s Go-To Pieces for a Simple, Chic Outfit
Estimated Reading Time: 2 minutes
Hailing from one of my favorite K-pop girl groups of all time, Kim Tae-yeon, better known mononymously as Taeyeon, debuted as the leader of SM Entertainment’s Girls’ Generation in 2007. Many fans, including yours truly, credit the group as their entrance into the colorful world of K-pop, and have loved their evolution from cute bubbly girls to experienced veterans with amazing stage presence.
Solidifying her distinct image and sound, Taeyeon began her solo career with the EP I in 2015. This year, she continues to break records with her second album Purpose and to strengthen her image with a stronger and more mature new look – complete with a wardrobe overhaul that every fan wants to cop!
>One of the key points in Taeyeon’s style is wearability. The comfortable fabrics, silhouettes and styling of her off-stage outfits are easy to emulate.
Taeyeon loves cozy pieces in muted shades with pops of color here and there, but her latest comeback shows that she’s not afraid to go extra either. That’s why I’ve chosen a comfy knit top with a lovely light blue to navy blue gradation. To cinch in its loose silhouette, I tucked the top into a creamy skirt with contrasting cobalt blue lettering. The skirt may be a statement piece with its loud print, but the midi length makes it easy to wear and add to any winter wardrobe.
One constant in the singer’s wardrobe throughout the year is light-colored mini dresses. For optimal warmth, I’ve chosen a mid-length knit vest with black-striped contrast trimming instead. Its simple creamy white color also tones down the prints and color-blocking of the skirt and top. One of the best things when temperatures drop is being able to layer and experiment with clothing, and this piece can elevate and bring together any outfit.
A coat is another piece that Taeyeon usually dons to stay warm on the move. Plus, the right coat gives any casual outfit a tailored and sophisticated finish. To brighten this look, I’ve selected a pink double-breasted coat with wide notched lapels that drape elegantly over the shoulders when unbuttoned, creating a softer silhouette. The subtle plaid pattern brings in a graceful touch perfect for the OST Queen.
Taking major inspo from the MV of her latest song Spark, I’ve styled the pop star in highly versatile faux leather black boots with comfortable kitten heels. The boots’ pointed toes elongate the silhouette while the ankle length makes it easy to wear them with a casual or formal outfit.
Intricate and sharp details are not usually in Taeyeon’s repertoire as she prefers cutesy and elegant embellishments. However, as a fun reference to the MV’s styling which is filled with tailoring details, I’ve added black crew socks designed with one removable adjustable strap.
Although Taeyeon may have proven herself as a mature and experienced record-breaking singer with many awards under her belt, to many SONEs (Girls’ Generation fans) like me, she will always be the cute and loveable “Kid Leader.”
A clutch that resembles a paper doll book adds childish whimsy to the outfit. The soft shades of the front cover’s illustrations also complement her gradient top. For accessories, we have a cute hair pin embellished with Tae’s favorite snack – gummy bears! The hair pin’s vibrant rainbow color scheme brings a minimal pop of color to the otherwise soft pastel palette of the outfit.
