Utilitarian to the Max with Seventeen’s The8
The8, whose real name is Xu Minghao, is the lead dancer, sub-vocalist and sub-rapper of K-pop boy group Seventeen. The Chinese member is part of Seventeen’s performance unit and is known for his b-boying skills.
Voted by fellow Seventeen members as the most fashionable in the group, The8 is one of the idols most requested by our readers, so he graces Style File’s very first feature of 2020! The K-pop idol is known for his rather outrageous fashion choices, which he pulls off effortlessly. Despite being incredibly fashion-forward, his style is easy to emulate due to his casual styling and incorporation of utilitarian details in all his outfits.
An off-duty The8 is still incredibly fashionable and often looks like he just stepped off the runway. That’s why I’ve opted for on-trend pieces in the latest utilitarian style. The main piece is a boxy millennial pink jumpsuit contrasted with black side panels along the four bellow pockets on the bodice and two on the thighs. Utilitarian fashion is about ease of movement and functionality, and this piece has a loose-fit cut as well as inverted box pleats on the knees to ensure comfort.
To cinch in the boxy silhouette and offer even more storage space, I accessorized with a forest green belt bag that snaps around the waist and the upper thigh for a hassle-free bag.
Layered underneath the jumpsuit is a knit turtleneck, but it’s not just your run-of-the-mill turtleneck. The folded turtleneck can be pulled up to create a balaclava piece with a crown peeking out at the top! Along with its eye-catching neon shade, this unique design is perfect for the fashionista idol and doubles as a warm and toasty piece to shield from cold winter gusts.
Sneakers are everyone’s wardrobe essentials as they’re comfortable and easy to wear, fitting right in with The8’s utilitarian look. Carats (Seventeen fans) know that The8 has a love for all things retro, so I’ve chosen low-top sneakers constructed in black corduroy, complete with corrugated toe caps and outsoles.
Utilitarian style usually focuses on solid-toned color palettes, making it perfect for everyday wear and for mixing and matching with different pieces. However, to add that extra flair that the K-pop idol is known for, I’ve chosen tie-dye socks in a vibrant red shade!
A rainbow building block centered on a rolo chain completes the look. This quirky accessory’s vibrant colors and buildable element complement the colors of the outfit.
The8 is always seen rocking a pair of sunnies in his airport looks, making it a must-have item to include in his outfit. I’ve opted for a classic black wayfarer design with a unique twist! These sunglasses fold in half at the bridge, while the temple straps easily snap and curve around the wrist.
